When was it ever acceptable to decide what people are allowed to have in terms of property based on YOUR definition or determination of what they "need?" ANSWER the question, what is your mental process in deciding what I should be allowed to own? What do you mean "automatic"? Do you mean a rifle that fires continuously when you pull the trigger until empty? I cannot own one of those in my state, but if I lived an another state, I would own one. They are federally controlled, licensed, and a legally owned machine gun has never been used by a private citizen to comit ANY crime, did you even know that? I don't want it to shoot any person ANY amount of times, you don't ask that question about the 12 gauge I do own, why ask it about a gun that you find "ugly"? Why do you assume I want to shoot anyone? The Columbine weapons were purchased ILLEGALLY by a straw purchaser, that's ALREADY illegal, did it stop them? The "ready availability" of guns is a myth. In California, if I decided I needed a firearm today, I could not pick up that firearm until 10 days have passed, that is NOT easy. Check the stats on gun crime, it's hard to get them here, and impossible to get "assault weapons," but gang bangers have and use them all the time. And you GET a license to drive a car ONCE, when you are 16, then they leave you alone. And you do not need one to buy a car, only to drive one. Driver's ed does not qualify to safely operate a 600HP Dodge Viper, but you are allowed to do so. I have to pass a background check every time I buy a firearm, and wait 10 days every time.
